Celebrating Performing Arts in Lutheran Schools

2017 PALS Festival

Plan now to attend the 2017 PALS Festival.  It will be held on Thursday, March 9, 2017. We look forward to another great day of music with you all!

Directors: Download an informational letter with detailed festival information for your groups.

If you are new to the PALS Festival and would like to know more about it, please contact Doug Urban.

The basic festival details are listed below.

Fees for the 2017 PALS Festival remain the same!  There is no fee increase because we want to make it easier for schools to continue to encourage the performing arts.

Entry fee: $75.00 --Includes the entry fee, judging fees, and a trophy for one large ensemble (band, choir, handbell choir).

Additional Large Ensemble: $45.00 each ensemble--This fee covers the trophy and judging fees.

Solos and Ensembles (vocal and instrumental): $5.00 each student--Each student receives an award for performing a solo or ensemble. Solos are $5.00. Ensembles are $5.00 per student participant. A trio would be $15.00, for example.

What is the PALS (Performing Arts in Lutheran Schools) Festival?
The PALS Festival is an opportunity for Lutheran middle school musical groups to perform in a competitive setting.  The groups' members may also perform as soloists or with ensembles.  The festival is usually held on the first Thursday in March every other year. In 2017 the festival will be held on the second Thursday due to conflicts with the Iowa Test schedule. Fifth - eighth grade bands, choirs, handbell choirs, and solos and ensembles are included in this festival.

How does the PALS Festival work?
Student musicians perform for judges who provide written feedback for the performance.  The performances are rated on a scale of I - V.  The ratings are explained below. For a sample rubric, click band or choir.
I - Superior
II - Excellent
III - Good
IV - Average
V - Fair

The festival is held every other year on the campus at Shepherd of the Hills.  For more information, contact Doug Urban, or call 210-614-3741.
